At the heart of this novella is the care of an aging parent and the fault lines of traditional family expectations. SATURDAY NIGHT follows a Sicilian-American family from 1950 to 1980. Concetta, the aging widowed matriarch of the family, adores Carmello, her son, and finds fault with Neddie, her gay daughter. Bernardo, a second son and failed boxer, is an embarrassment to Concetta. As the matriarch ages, she re-positions herself in her children’s lives. When circumstances require her to live temporarily with Carmello, she disrupts his suburban Long Island comfort, creating a fissure between him and his wife. Distance is no obstacle for Concetta’s reach. By hinting at reconciliation, she also unravels the life of her daughter and partner who live together in San Francisco, a relationship Concetta has aggressively criticized. Both Carmello and Neddie have coupled with powerful out-of-tribe women. Carmello’s wife, Justine, challenges her husband’s mindless privilege; Neddie’s partner, Linda, challenges the neurotic long-distance attachment Neddie has to Concetta. By the last page, only Concetta is unchanged by her machinations

I remember sitting at some kind of opening cocktail party at an OutWrite Conference in Boston back in the later 80s. I was hanging out with some writers I knew and others I'd met online, and I asked, out loud, "Whatever happened to Dodici Azpadu?"The writers at my table looked at me blankly, but a writer at the next table, a well-known and well-established novelist, leaned forward intently and asked, urgently, "Whatever _did_ happen to Dodici Azpadu?" We two completely different people, moving in different circles, both writers who cared deeply about words and the work of lesbian writers, were connected for a moment by the memory of a promising novelist who seemed to have appeared from nowhere, published a couple of very interesting works, and then disappeared again.
How wonderful it is to see Azpadu's second novel (I assume that's what this is?) back in print. How marvelous to find out that there's a _third_ Azpadu novel available for purchase. I am so glad that I've asked myself that question, over the years, often enough to stumble upon her recent reprint and newer novel. What a great day for literature by lesbians!
