Inspired by true events...

Losses send a woman's soul into its darkest winter...

Maria has cared for her very ill mother for many years. Her burdens are heavy, causing a sadness bordering on darkness. When she discovers her historic barn is now home to a mother cat and kittens, she feels lighter than she has in years. As the kittens grow, they teach her as only animals can do.

Then tragedy strikes. As Maria loses her family, the darkness envelopes her like the heavy fog that blankets her Blue Ridge Mountain home each morning. She creates a scorecard God 9, Maria 0. Her questions turn into anger at God. She searches to find answers as to why her loving God would take away so much in such a short time.

How will she learn to trust again? Can the kittens in her barn help her heal?

Barn Cats is a memoir spanning two years in Maria Santomasso-Hyde’s life. It takes place during a time when she experienced so much loss it seems a miracle she didn’t drown, or at least float away, in the ocean of tears she shed.

There are so many things I love about this memoir. I love that while you will most likely find it in the devotional/inspirational section of a bookstore; it doesn’t preach. I love that, although it’s about one person’s emotional survival during a time of devastating loss, the author never once comes across as self-absorbed or self-pitying.

I especially love that this book tells a complete story without burdening the reader with so much as one extraneous word, detail, or description.

But perhaps what I love most of all, is that it is narrated by nine or ten voices, only four of which are human. It is challenging, to say the least, to make animal narrators work; too often they simply do not come across as credible. But, in this book, they do. In this book, every single one of the animal narrators is as real and believable as the four human ones. And in the gentlest, and most extraordinary of ways, it is often the animals who let us see the details, and the pain Maria Santomasso-Hyde experiences. It was a risky approach to take in writing a memoir, but she made it work.

It was because of the animals, either because of what they said or because of the loss of them, that I cried through nearly every page of this book. And, why I cried long after I finished it.

And, this is another thing I love about Barn Cats: it’s a sad book, but it is not an unhappy one. It is, instead, a book about the very real and desperate pain of loss. It is about the heart-wrenching, spirit-busting journey back to a place where—if but for only a moment at first—joy is once again experienced.

Barn Cats is the heartbreaking story of a woman who deeply loved—and lost—her family, her dog, and her four beautiful barn cats, all within a small window of time. But it is also the heart-warming story of the white dove, the sparrow, and seven deer who reminded her, even in the face of unfathomable loss, God is still listening.

Loved "He Gave Me Barn Cats". It is a heartfelt beautiful story of faith put to the test, and the power of our faithful Lord to restore joy where there was sorrow and peace that surpasses all doubt and fear. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down.
I found this book to be engaging, interesting, fun and a wonderful learning experience. I am not a cat owner however I do some volunteer work at a local shelter and work exclusively with cats taking photographs to help the kitties get adopted. The "voice and personality" of the cats ...very well done and I suspect not an easy task.
Enjoy your read.

(In the interest of full disclosure, I will tell those reading this that the author and others who appear in this book are also my friends. Further, Maria and I attended college at the same university, for some part, at the same time, though we don't recall know one another at that time. We attend the same church, are even members of the same Sunday School class and make our homes in nearby communities. We share a love for Art and God. All that being said, I believe I am able to give a sincere, honesty and unbiased review of her book. Additionally, I purchased this book thru and have received nothing in the way of compensation for this review, save for Maria's gratitude and thanks. Portions of the review were originally part of personal comments I shared with Maria earlier on Facebook and edited lightly to fit a book review format.)

I finished reading He Gave Me Barn Cats, last night. What a wonderful book! And reading it following the passing of my sister this past week was so comforting and revealing. I can't count the number of "Wow" moments I experienced as things Maria related were so much like my own. And what a reading experience to hear and see in my mind Maria, Lee, Roy, Ted and others, and the places she and I both know and love, as I read the words on the page. Early in my getting to know Maria, I recognized her deep and abiding love of God, her knowledge of scripture and things spiritual, and her tender heart. Now having shared Maria's journey vicariously through her writing, I now believe I understand where that has its foundations. Thank you, Maria, for sharing your struggles, heartaches, and joys, in this book, and in our many personal encounters at church. I always listen closer when Maria shares her thoughts in Hope Class. Many times she has said something to me that was so kind and unexpected that I may not have sufficiently responded at the time. I am honored that she considers me a friend and accepts my friendship in return. Now, I just have to control my anticipation of Cat Tales, her next book. Congratulations on the publishing of He Gave Me Barn Cats, Maria's first book!

While I read broadly and rather voraciously, and certainly could perhaps write a critical review of the style or literary qualities of He Gave Me Barn Cats, I have chosen not to focus on these aspects of the book, even thought the book is very well written, at times both humorous and heartbreaking, and a compelling read. I recommend this book on the depth of feeling, pain, joy, conviction, and genuine soul searching Maria allows the reader to witness through her writing. With the perspective of a real, and genuine friendship, and some first hand knowledge of the things Maria has revealed in He Gave Her Barn Cats, I encourage you to experience this wonderful little book for yourself.
I met Maria last fall when my husband and I were spending our anniversary weekend in the NC mountains. We visited her art gallery, Alta Vista, in Valle Crucis to see a show of one of my favorite artist's paintings. The time we spent in the gallery was wonderful - we came out feeling as if we'd known Maria for years! It was later that I learned she had written a book that was soon to be released, and I knew we had a connection beyond our brief meeting! The title, spoke to me immediately since we had just sold our small horse farm which had been home to many barn cats over the years. I ordered the book last week. It was at my door when I got home from work on Friday afternoon. I started reading and couldn't put it down till I finished it before going to bed! From her faith and love for the Lord, family, animal friends and my favorite place in the world - Valle Crucis - I felt she was telling a version of a similar time in my life 16 years ago! Her honesty about her pain, frustration, anger, loss and journey to renewal showed her deep faith, trust and hope! Can't wait for her next book!
